Did you know?

Tanzanian households with a chronically ill member experience 30 - 35 percent decrease in average household income.

Fund Raising Ideas

You are limited only by your imagination. No group is too large or too small to become involved in a People’s Hope, Incorporation (PHI) fund raising project.

Here are some ideas that other PHI friends have shared with us:

  • car washes
  • community walks
  • spaghetti dinners/pancake breakfast
  • Bazaars
  • Group garage or yard sales.

The possibilities are endless. You may wish to try group fasting, after which each participant contributes the cost of the missed meal.

Try a volleyball marathon, where participants get pledges for the amount of time played.

Community walks have been a successful activity. Set a date , publicize, provide sponsor sheets for the walkers to enable pledges, and do it.

The more creative you are, the more fun your group will have helping others.

You may wish to try an educational activity for young people, such as a play about growing up in Africa.

Some organizations have placed their annual contribution to many other organizations directly into their budgets. We would gratefully assist you in making a similar commitment to PHI.

Any effort on the part of your group would be a blessing to the poor people in Tanzania who need our help.

Endowment

What is an endowment?

An endowment is a donation where the amount donated (called the principal) is invested in perpetuity, generating income every year to be spent for a specified purpose. In our case, the money will be spent to run People’s Hope Hospital in Tanzania, East Africa.

Why establish an endowment?

By establishing an endowment, you are ensuring a stronger People’s Hope Incorporation (PHI) with a solid financial foundation for helping the poor people in Tanzania. While we all must give, and give continuously to the People’s Hope Incorporation (PHI) to allow it to carry on its operations, we should also consider doing something that will have a lasting impact, year in and year out.

How can I establish an endowment?

It is quite easy. You may do so at any time, here are some of creative ways/ideas on how you can help:

  1. Contribute long-term capital gain property (i.e, stocks or bonds). In most cases, donors can get a tax deduction for the fair market value of investment property they contribute. This has significant tax benefits, as no tax would be paid on the increase in value over the purchase price of the investment.
  2. Remember People’s Hope Incorporation (PHI) in your will.
  3. Give your tax refund to People’s Hope Incorporation.
  4. Are you getting an unexpected tax refund this year? Why not share it (or part of it) to support PHI programs.
  5. List PHI as a life insurance beneficiary. If it is no longer necessary to designate life insurance proceeds to spouse or children, consider making PHI the owner or beneficiary of your policy.
  6. Establish a charitable trust. Did you know it was possible to set aside funds for PHI and yet continue to receive current income? By setting up charitable trust, you could set aside a portion of your assets to go to PHI at death, while retaining the rights to current income.
  7. Take advantage of your employer’s matching gift program. Many companies have matching gift programs. This might enable you to "double your money" to PHI. Check your company’s human resources department for more details.
  8. Set up your own matching gift program. You don’t have to be wealthy to establish a matching gift program. Challenge your children with match dollar for dollar any money they give to PHI. If you are Sunday school teacher or youth group leader, make the same challenge to your Sunday School class or youth group.

Contact the PHI Office for more information on these and other creative giving ideas. Do you have a creative giving idea? We’d love to hear about it and share it with others.

For detailed information, we suggest you contact your own tax and/or financial planner.

A brochure is available for your information. You may call or write the PHI Office and request it.
